Moomin Arabia / iittala mug 300ml / 10oz Muskrat
The Muskrat is a philosopher who reads dark, philosophical books and shares his pessimistic views with others. The Muskrat likes to spend time in the Moomin family’s hammock, reading his favourite book. The worst thing he knows is to lose his dignity, which unfortunately happens all too often in the Moominhouse. Moomin Arabia, mug 0.3 l, The Muskrat
Moomin mug Muscat in the cave is the first Arabian Moomin mug in which the philosopher Muscat Rat appears. Moomin collectors have been hoping for their own character mug for Moomin collectors for a long time. Of Tove Jansson's books, the Bishop's Rat appears only in Moomintroll and the Tail Star (1955) and The Magician's Hat (1956). In recent years, however, Muscat has gained a lot of visibility in the Moominvalley animated series, which premiered in 2019. The mug is also known as Muscat Rat beige.
The illustrations of the Muscat Rat in the Cave mug are based on the book The Magician's Hat. In the book, the Muscat is a mustachioed old gentleman who likes to be alone and ponders life's biggest questions through books. The Mussel Rat's views of the world are not always the rosiest, as is evident from the title of the book "The Uselessness of Everything" read by the Mussel rat, which also appears in the illustrations of the mug. Piisamirotta is not alarmed by much, but when she collapses to the ground from her favourite lounging place, a hammock next to Moominhouse, her dignity suffers a major blow. Already tired of the restlessness of Moominhouse, Muscat decides to retire to the cave by the shore to continue his deep reflections in peace.
The Bishop's Rat in the Cave tableware collection is the last illustration work by illustrator Tove Slotte, who retired in 2022, together with the Sniff on the Beach tableware set published at the same time.

Tove Slotte
Arabia’s Moomins are turned from stories to ceramic illustrations by designer Tove Slotte. She has been drawing Moomins onto Arabia items since the beginning of the 1990s. The designer draws inspiration from Tove Jansson’s original illustrations, which she adapts to ceramic shapes. The Moomins have always been close to Tove Slotte’s heart. She articulated the significance of the Moomins nicely when she said: I think everyone should enjoy a little dose of Moomin philosophy every day.
