Sniff is almost as a younger sibling to Moomintroll, having been adopted by the Moomin family at an early age. Moomin mug Sniff on the Beach replaces the previous Nipsu character mug, which will be discontinued on 31.3.2024. The new Sniff on the Beach mug is already the third character mug in which Sniff plays the main role. The mug is also known as Sniff Blue.

The illustrations for the Sniff on the Beach Moomin mug are based on Tove Jansson's first Moomin comic, Moomintroll, from 1954. In the comic, numerous friends and relatives arrive at Moominhouse, which is why Moomintroll no longer has his own place to sleep in the house. Sniff decides to help his friend build his own house. Nipsu intends to raise funds for the house project by inventing the elixir of youth and selling it to the residents of Moominvalley. However, the elixir turns out to be a magic potion that turns the drinker into his own opposite. The illustration for the new Sniff mug shows Sniff drinking an elixir to a turtle that, after consuming the drink, turns into an express train. On the other side of the mug, Sniff is seen admiring the sunset and perhaps dreaming of riches and fame in his typical way. Next to Sniff there is also Samu, that helpful little creature who follows Moomintroll and Sniff almost everywhere.

The Sniff on the Beach tableware collection is the last illustration work by illustrator Tove Slotte, who retired in 2022, together with the Piisamirotta tableware set published at the same time.

Tove Slotte

Arabia’s Moomins are turned from stories to ceramic illustrations by designer Tove Slotte. She has been drawing Moomins onto Arabia items since the beginning of the 1990s. The designer draws inspiration from Tove Jansson’s original illustrations, which she adapts to ceramic shapes. The Moomins have always been close to Tove Slotte’s heart. She articulated the significance of the Moomins nicely when she said: I think everyone should enjoy a little dose of Moomin philosophy every day.
