Asterisk clock Brass by George Nelson for Vitra
George Nelson
With his collection of Wall Clocks (1948-1960), George Nelson conceived a wide array of timepieces, many of which have since become icons of 1950s design.
With the diversity of materials used and their sculptural shapes, George Nelson’s clocks embody the attitudes of the 1950s. To this day, his wall clocks remain a refreshing alternative to the usual timekeepers. The Vitra Design Museum presents a re-edition of the designs so cherished by collectors, staying true to the original form.
The traditional wall clock has a relaxing effect on the viewer and sparks conversations – possibly because of the materials, since wood and metal aren’t exceptionally new products but what counts is what George Nelson made out of them. The sophisticated quartz clockwork (includes a 1.5 V battery) is moreover a guarantee for a long life with a reliable time measurement.
